Treating Your Bunions

Treating Your Bunions

Bunions aren't just things that make some people unhappy with the appearance of their feet—they can also cause foot pain that can make it difficult to move through your day. At Prestige Podiatry, we offer treatment for bunions in Indianapolis and Carmel, IN. Our podiatry care team is here to help you with any foot-related issues.

Here, we'll take a look at what bunions are, how they develop, and what you can do to find relief from bunion-related pain.

What are Bunions?

Bunions are bony protrusions that form at the base of a toe, usually the big one, causing it to be pulled closer to your smaller toes. When a bunion occurs, the base of the joint of your toe sticks out.

Sometimes, the skin surrounding your bunion can become red and irritated. You may also find that you have trouble wearing certain types of shoes, or that you experience pain in and around your bunion when exercising.

Sometimes, bunions occur without pain. Other times, bunions can become irritating. If you experience foot pain, can see a bunion forming, are struggling to have a full range of motion with your big toe joint, or can’t find comfortable shoes, it's important to reach out to a podiatrist for an evaluation.

Bunion Treatment Options

While surgery is the only way to fully remove a bunion, you may find some relief with other treatment options. Wearing specialized orthotics or using toe separators can help to keep your toes in alignment, relieving some of the issues associated with bunions. Maintaining a healthy weight can also help to relieve some of the pressure on your feet, lessening your pain.
